PETERSTOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL, WEST VIRGINIA

Meet Valerie Turner's 5th Grade Class,

Hello,

We are 19 fifth grade students from Peterstown, West Virginia. We are
taught Science by our teacher, Valerie Turner. Peterstown is a
community in rural Monroe County. Our school is located in southern
West Virginia. We are a Middle School of 364 students in grades 5-8. We
are 2 miles from the Virginia border.
West Virginia is known for coal production, but this is not part of
our daily lives. There are no mines in Monroe County. We do have a
large farming community and many of our families are employed in
factories. Tourism has become a big draw for our county. There are
many caves to explore and The New River is near to us. Canoeing and
rafting is fun! The Appalachian Trail is close, also we have many ski
resorts in surrounding counties. People in our county are even building
a golf course that will draw in a lot of tourists. It is very pretty
here.
Our weather is cool at present. Our climate is temperate. We have
snow in the winter, cool springs, warm summers and nice autumn weather,
too. Our trees turn beautiful colors in the fall and we see many
visitors that come to our area to see the trees. Our weather today is
cloudy, and somewhat cold. We had 1 and 1/2 inches of snow this morning
that quickly melted off.
Mrs. Turner is teaching us about the weather. We have built a
psycrometer to use to find the humidity. It is neat. We are also
studying weather maps and learning about Highs and Lows, as well as, all
other aspects of weather. Next week, we are making barometers and
thermometers. We like science.
(P.S. We have a new class pet, a gerbil named Nibbles.)
We are currently involved in two weather projects on the internet. One
keeps track of snow fall and the other tracks weather conditions. It is
fun to hear from students around the country and world.

PARKWAY ELEMENTARY, TEXAS

Parkway Elementary is located in Ft. Worth, Texas. Our city is located
at 32degrees N. and 97 degrees W. Ft. Worth receives an average of 40
inches of rainfall each year and our average yearly temp is 48 degrees.
Texas is mostly dry. Fort Worth has very little snow. It would be a
miracle if we had a blizzard. About once a year it snows a little in
Ft. Worth. Actually it is more like crushed soft ice rather than
snowflakes.
We are a class of ninteen fourth gradsers. Fort Worth is a busy town.
Our school has about 600 students from grades Pre-K through sixth. We
have a computer in our classroom and we go to computer lab twice a
week. We are about to do biography reports and we get to dress up like
the person we are learning about. This year our class won the
multiplication world series in our building.
The Dallas/Ft. Worth area has four professional sports teams: the
Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and Dallas Stars.
We are excited about this project. We notices that all the other
schools are from places where it snows.

NEW JERSEY:

CHERRY HILL ELEMENTARY

Hi, this is the second grade. There are twenty five students in this
class. We live in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Tommy and Remy and Miss
McDermott's class are very happy to send this letter to you! This
program is called ''Let It Snow!'' Miss Pietruszka (our computer
teacher) is going to tell us about this project. Miss McDermott's class
is from Cherry Hill. Were doing Story Book Weaver in computer class
because we are learning how to make stories. We are happy to start
Storybook Weaver again.

In New Jersey we have mostly rain and sunshine. It's been a good year
so far, since it hasn't snowed too much and we have had a little bit of
rain. Today it is about forty degrees.

KILMER ELEM. Coming soon :-)

INDIAN MILLS SCHOOL

Hello to everyone!
I am the computer teacher/tech. coord. at Indian Mills School located in
Shamong Twp., Burlington County, New Jersey. Our school has students in
grades K through 3. We are located in a area surrounded by the Pine
Barrens. The school is in a rural location with a number of housing
developments situated in wooded locations.
This year has been a giant leap for us in regards to utilizing
computers. We have completed having our network installed and running,
as well as having the Internet accessible throughout the school. I am
currently working on our web site: www.ims.k12.nj.us. Stop by if you
get a chance. It is still in the early stages of development!
I decided we would start this project this year with the K & 1st grade
classes. The children are very excited about meeting new friends via the
Internet, as well as seeing their own work displayed on the Internet.
Our current weather has been turning more seasonable for this area,
highs in the upper 30's to low 40's and nights down in the 20's. A
couple of weeks ago we had a week of weather in the 60's. So far this
winter we have had no major snow storms, each possible nor'eastern
turned out to be just rain.

Look forward to writing to each group later on!
Alan Taylor

LINCOLN SCHOOL

Hello folks!

Our school is Lincoln School located in Rockaway, New Jersey. It is
a K-4 school and soon it will be a K-3 building since the fourth grade is
moving to Thomas Jefferson School which is the middle school in our
district. We have 4 second grades in our school. Our principal is named
Mr. Phillips. Our school is pretty big. It used to be a high school --
many years ago! The gym is little. We don't even have bleachers! We are
on the highest floor.

We have art, music, and library once a week. We are located in the library
since they had to add our class on this year. Our teacher is new. We have
free time on Fridays which is a whole lot of fun. Our class is nice to each
other.

We live in a suburban area in New Jersey. It is cold here at this time.
It snows here sometimes, but not that much this year. In the spring, it is
not too cold and not too hot. In the summer, it is hot. In the fall, we
can play with leaves because they fall off the trees. In winter, it is
very cold and some icicles hang and snow often falls. It is our class's
favorite time of the year!

In Rockaway, you can go to the mall. It is called Rockaway Mall. At the
mall, you can go shopping. Also, you could buy books, eat food, and get
toys. You can sign up for softball and other sports. Also, you can ice
skate at the Mennen Arena which is about half an hour away from here.

We have lots of fun at school and can't wait to work with you!!!!

WISCONSIN: FOREST GLEN ELEMENTARY

Hi CyberPartners!!

We are in 3rd grade at Forest Glen Elementary School. We 22 kids in our
class, we are working with 2 teachers and have 1 gerbil named, Tazerina
(that we got for Xmas). Our school is in a rural area of Green Bay--the
district's name is Howard-Suamico.

Our most exciting news of the week is that the Packers are going to the
Super Bowl for a repeat performance. In fact, they left Green Bay
yesterday. To celebrate, we are wearing Packer clothing, hats, and
having a tailgate lunch. We hope that you are all cheering for the
Packers this Sunday--any fans out there????

On Friday, we are going skating for an incentive. We earned this
incentive by making good decisions about appropriate behavior and
schoolwork. Our first incentive of the year was called "NFL
experience" where we played football related games and activities. Our
next incentive is swimming.

Tourism is popular here. Lots of people visit our city/area in winter
to go skating, sledding, skiing, snowmobiling and to sporting events.
We have a semi-pro hockey team--the Gamblers, a college basketball
team--the Fighting Phoenix, and a semi-Pro basketball team --The
Wisconsin Blast. Of course, we needn't mention (again) the
Packers!!!!!!!! When people vacation in our area, they like to visit
our NEW Zoo, Bay Beach, Packer Hall of Fame, Lambeau Field, Wildlife
Sanctuary, Barkhausen Nature Preserve and more.

The major employers in our area are the paper mills and large insurance
companies. Green Bay is named Green Bay because it is located on a bay
off of Lake Michigan. Our largest river is the Fox River--see if you
can find us on a map!!

Our weather has pretty mild for winter. We had no snow until the second
week in January. We had icy weather for a week and we missed school one
day and had a couple of late-start days. Our temperatures have been
pretty mild- 10-30 degrees.
Looking forward to working with you all.

Sincerely, Ms. Marohl's Class
P.S. Go Pack Go!!!!!

Our baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles made it to the World Series

Cromwell Valley Elementary

Dear Friends in the Snowy U.S.

We are fourth graders in Mrs. S's class. Her real name is Mrs.
Stubblefield. we call her Mrs. S. because her last name is really
long. We go to Cromwell Valley Regional School of Technology. our
school lis a magnet school. That means that kids have to apply to go
here. We have 24 kids in our class. We live in the state of Maryland
and the city of Baltimore. we have about453 kids in our school. Our
school goes from kindergarten to 5th grade. We have 3 classes of each
grade. We also have a big gym where we have P.E., an art room where we
have art, and two music rooms. We have vocal music and instrumental
music. We also have one main computer lab and 2 mini computer labs. We
have a neat library/media center and we aslo take Japanese 2 times a
week. We are very busy, you see.

In our classroom we are "the mice." We read lots of books about mice
and we have a pet African spiny mouse named Owen. He is named after the
book character by Kevin Henkes. We used to have 2 other mice named
Lilly and Summer but they died. One day we found a nest of field mice
in Mrs. S.'s closet. There were 4 baby mice in it. We caught one, one
died and the other two are still running around our room somewhere! The
one we caught was really cute but we released him since he was a field
mouse. We also have an aquarium with 8 fish.

We hope you try hard to find us on a map. We have a big map in our room
and we have located everybody who has written so far on our map.

We like recess. Most of the boys like to play football on the field
that is behind our play equipment.

The weather here is in the 30's and 40's during the day. At night is is
usually in the 20's. We haven't had a snow day yet, but we are still
doing our snow dance!

We are reading a book together called The Watsons Go to Birmingham -
1963. We really like it. We have LOTS of books in our room.

At lunch time some of us eat lunch with Mrs. S. and we have a Chess
Club. So far we are playing a chess game with the pawns, the king and
the queen.

We like sports in our city. Did you know that our state sport is
lacrosse? Our lacrossse team is the Baltimore Thunder, our hockey team
is the Baltimore bandits, and our soccer team is the Baltimore Spirits.
Of course we have a great baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles and a
football team called the Ravens which we wonder if they will even get to
the Superbowl in the next century!!! (Good luck to our Green Bay Packer
friends!)

We liked reading your letters and we hope you liked reading ours.

MICHIGAN: NOVI WOODS ELEMENTARY

Introducing Gwen Havela's 1st Grade:

We are a first grade classroom in Novi, Michigan. We are about forty minutes
from Detroit. We live in the fastest growing city in Michigan. We have a
large mall called Twelve Oaks and Novi is known a lot because of it.
We have some snow. We got 2 inches of snow last night and have some light
snow right now. Our temperature has been in the 20's and 30's lately. We have
had only 2 days of sun this month.
We have 22 students. Our teacher's name is Mrs. Havelka. Our principal's
name is Mrs. Lawrence. We have two new students from Japan and we are helping
them to learn English. Our school's name is Novi Woods elementary. We have
k-4 classes in our school. We have 568 students so we are a big school!
We go to gym, art, music and media center once each week.
We have a guinea pig in our room. Her name is Silvia. She can go home with
us for weekends and vacations. At the start of the year we had a guinea pig
named Pedre, but sadly he died. We also have suitcases that go home each day
with someone in our class. There is a journal, book, stuffed animal,
toothbrush and a project to do that night.
Right now our author of the month is Jan Brett so we are taking home a stuffed
hedgehog and the book, The Mitten.
We route for the University of Michigan Wolverines and are very happy that
they won the National Championship in football. Go Blue! Some of us root for
Michigan State, too. We also root for the Detroit Red Wings. They won their
last game.
We are looking forward to this project.
