PICK A PROJECT ... LEARNING TOGETHER IS FUN
THE GLOBAL ALPHABET QUILT PROJECT
An Electronic Elementary Magazine Project4>
Registration deadline: February 1
Approximate Timeline: February - April
Flexible (adapt and select activities that meet your instructional needs.)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Students will choose an alphabet letter and design a quilt square for the country or place where they live or a place they are studying. (Only one letter per class, please. )
PURPOSE
The illustrated alphabet quilt and linked pages will help us learn about the different languages, cultures, and lands of our global family.
Since there are many alphabets (and some languages which use
characters and not alphabets) there are rich opportunities for
multi-lingual pages. The project will share information
about the spoken and written languages; explore geography; identify cultural contributions of countries.
Note: This project is flexible and may be changed by agreement of
project participants.
Proposed activities for participants:
- Activity 1: Design the quilt square. Put the first letter not the name of the place on the quilt square. Your design should give clues to the land the letter represents. (by February 7)
- Activity 2: Write an essay telling some of the landmarks, features, games, holidays, or customs special to that place.
- Activity 3: Show and tell what languages are written and spoken there. Research to see if those languages are spoken anywhere else in the world. Share what you find out. (Students can create maps)
- Activity 4: Give directions for making a craft or recipe of that land.
- Activity 5: Give recommendations for WWW sites and other sources of information about your place.
Sit back and admire the global alphabet quilt. Share it with other classes, parents, friends.
Culminating Activity: Write a message to a participating class to discuss what you learned about their place in the world. Optional: CU-See-Me Video conferencing
Extension ideas and activities:
- Create original artwork depicting the landmarks, clothing; holidays,
kid-created coloring book pages
- Share photos; maps, poems, sound files,
- Include interviews; descriptions of favorite children's games
- Share popular nursery, jump, or game rhymes popular in that country.
- Have a MultiCultural Quilt Celebration. Make some of the crafts and recipes from the alphabet quilt pages and invite friends or parents in to enjoy!
Project samples will be posted soon.
