After connecting, you may first be asked to choose a service, where sailor is one of two or more services -- choose sailor.

Then, when you are given a login: prompt, take the offered advice and type guest and press return/enter.

When asked for a terminal type, press return/enter if it suggests a terminal type, or type in vt100 if it doesn't -- and make sure your communications program is doing a vt100 (or vt102, or ansi) terminal emulation.

When you get through any read-me type material (pressing return/enter), you are given the ******** Welcome to SAILOR ******* menu. Choose Sailor Home Page by typing 1 and pressing return/enter.

You now are in lynx, the text-only web browser used by Sailor. You can get to the UMCP Unix Cluster machines by one of two ways:

• By menu (you can make menu choices by one of two methods):
  • Type the numbers of the desired item and press return/enter (but be careful: the numbers may change, and you have to use the numbers that match the text below)
  • OR: use the up or down arrow keys to move from one item to another (even if they are side by side -- don't be tempted to use the right or left arrow keys to move from one item to another), and then, when you have highlighted the correct item (and ONLY then) use the right-arrow to go "into" it (and the left-arrow if you make a mistake and need to "back out of" a link)

    If a link is not immediately visible on the screen because it is too far down the page (as in the case of the first item below, for instance), you can bring it into view by "turning the page" (jumping down one screenful) -- just press the spacebar.

    Again, don't trust the numbers without actually seeing them -- they change too often:

• or directly: If you're a good typist, or if Sailor's response to each menu choice is slow, you may find it more convenient to skip the menu process and go straight to the Cluster-machines menu by typing lynx's GO command -- "G" -- and then typing
  http://www.inform.umd.edu/telnets/cluster/

But whichever you choose, keep in mind that it will assume you are still called "guest", which is how you logged into Sailor, and will immediately ask you for a password, instead of your login-id. Just press return/enter at the Password: prompt and start fresh at the next login: prompt.

Zmodem Warning -- Zmodem transfers (particular of binary files) don't work well through the kind of "7-bit-clear" telnet connection Sailor currently provides. People using Sailor should try using the Kermit protocol instead of Zmodem, if they have access to it and their transfers are tending to get hung up.

PPP Warning -- If you are trying to use a pseudo-PPP (TIA/SLiRP) connection so as to run Netscape and other internet-dependent programs, you cannot do this with any software currently available for Macintoshes. You can do it if you have a PC, using special commercial software called Virtual TCP. For more information about VTCP, see
