Queer in the Mirror: A Symposium on Body Image and Identity

Featuring Kate Bornstein (Transgender Activist,  Performance Artist and author of "Gender Outlaw") and Dawn Atkins (Editor of Looking Queer:Body Image and Identity in Lesbian, Bisexual , Gay and Transgender Communities)

WHEN IS IT?

The Queer Body Image Symposium will happen from 9AM to 5PM on Saturday, April 29, 2000 on the Stanford University Campus.

WHAT IS IT?

The purpose of this one-day gathering is to stimulate dialogue and personal thought regarding the relationship between body image issues and a variety of health issues that affect Queer people. We strongly believe that body dissatisfaction is a core issue underlying a person's: feelings of adequacy, self-worth, self-esteem, and identity. In turn, strong feelings of inadequacy can have a powerful regulating effect on behaviors that enhance or inhibit a person's health. It is important to note that we are using an expanded definition of "body image issues" to include ways in which queer folks strive to reach often unattainable ideals of what it means to be an authentic/real/true queer person. Topics may include and are not limited to the following:

-       The media and targeting of advertising towards queer people
-       Body sculpting and exercise addiction
-       Body image issues for transgender people
-       Body image issues for people of color including fetishization of queer people of color
-       Body image issues for lesbians
-       Looksism and body fascism
-       Ageism and Aging out
-       Queer Body Image From a Teenage Perspective
-       Fat Phobia, Fat Hatred and FatPower

WHO IS INVITED?

The Queer Body Image Symposium is mainly focused on high school and college age queer youth from the greater San Francisco Bay Area. However, the feedback we have gotten is that the topic is so timely and compelling that queer folks of all ages have been requesting to be able to attend.
