Subject: TRANSITION IN HACU'S LEADERSHIP (fwd) Date: Mon, 31 Jul 1995 15:08:00 EDT From: Research.Latino The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) announces that Laudelina Martinez is leaving the presidency of the organization after three years to form a Washington-based Latino think tank. Her new organization will be aimed at bringing greater national visibility to cross-cultural issues and making connections among the nation's different cultures. While Ms. Martinez was president, HACU gained greater national visibility, achieving recognition of Hispanic-Serving Institutions in federal law and $12 million in appropriations for fiscal year 1995. Martinez expanded HACU's membership, increased agreement with federal agencies and added new student scholarships from corporations and individuals. She was one of several Hispanic educators to promote an executive order that President Clinton signed last year advancing excellence in Hispanic education. For her work, Hispanic Business Magazine recognized her as one of the nation's 100 most influential Hispanic leaders for three years in a row. Ms. Connie Valdez, Chair of the HACU Governing Board, announced that Chuck Rodriguez, former HACU Vice-President of Advancement, has been appointed as Interim President. She indicated that a search committee has been designated to evaluate candidates for President of HACU. Ms. Martinez assumed the presidency of HACU in 1992 after serving as an official of the New York State Education Department for seven years. Prior to that, she worked as a college dean, assistant dean and instructor.
