Graduate Teaching Assistantship

GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP: ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES PROJECT OFFICE

The Asian American Studies Project Office (AASP) is seeking qualified candidates. The AASP is currently preparing a formal academic program proposal for the institution of an Asian American Studies Certificate Program on campus.

The Graduate TA will be involved in the following:

1. Assist the director with administrative responsibilities in the office and help to institute the Asian American Studies Program.
2. Assist the director in developing and implementing seminars, workshops, and colloquia for the campus.
3. Manage the day to day budget of the office.
4. Teach the introduction to Asian American Studies course (AMST 298C).
5. Work as a liason with the Asian American Student Union and various campus student organizations to develop support for the project's proposal.
6. Be a resource and liason with community service organizations (e.g., Organization for Chinese Americans), and to help develop support among these organizations for the project's program.
7. Be a resource for campus students who may be seeking assistance and information about the project and about Asian American Studies.
8. Serve on the Asian American Studies Steering Committee.

Benefits:

10 credit Tuition Remission
12 month Graduate Stipend at or above the GA II level. This amount will be determined by the director and the qualifications of the candidate.

Qualifications:

The candidate for this position must be in a graduate program at the University of Maryland and be eligible for tuition remission and a graduate stipend. Preference is for graduate students in doctoral programs. Candidates should be able to show a record of participation in Asian American studies that include such things as published papers, conference presentations, and student organization participation. The qualified candidate must be able to teach an undergraduate introduction to Asian American Studies course. The person must know the curricular demands of such a course and be able to meet these demands.

Starting Date would be in late July or early August 1999.
