Procedures And Guidelines For Conducting Faculty And Staff Searches At UMCP

CHAPTER 9

INTERNAL SEARCHES FOR DIRECTORS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS

Under various circumstances, units sometimes wish to appoint current faculty or staff to leadership in departments or programs through the process of an internal search. Such occasions offer valuable opportunities for promoting knowledgeable and experien ced campus personnel to positions of greater responsibility and leadership. Given this potential, the campus is fully committed to identifying and appointing employees from underrepresented groups to such positions. The following procedures have been de veloped to insure that affirmative action considerations are an integral part of the decision-making process for these appointments.

Units wishing to make appointments utilizing an internal search must first request a waiver of the requirement for external searches from the appropriate Vice President or President via the Equity Administrator to fill the position. The request should include:

  1. A rationale for making the appointment outside of the regular search procedures.

  2. The procedures to be used for insuring that a diverse pool of candidates will be considered for the appointment.

Upon receiving approval, the unit should then follow the procedures for conducting searches for permanent appointments, except for external advertising.
