Procedures And Guidelines For Conducting Faculty And Staff Searches At UMCP

CHAPTER 10

REORGANIZATION APPOINTMENTS

As a result of internal reorganizations, units may wish to appoint current employees to different or newly created positions. Such instances offer valuable opportunities for promoting knowledgeable and experienced campus personnel to positions of greater responsibility and leadership. Given this potential, the campus is fully committed to identifying and appointing employees from underrepresented groups to such positions. The following procedures have been developed to insure that affirmative action co nsiderations are an integral part of the decision-making process for these appointments.

Units wishing to make appointments as a result of internal reorganizations must first submit a request to fill the position to the Major Unit Head via the Equity Administrator. The request should include:

  1. A position description (units interested in creating new positions must first contact the Personnel Services Department for information regarding that process).

  2. A rationale for making the appointment outside of the regular search procedures.

  3. The procedures to be used for insuring that a diverse pool of candidates will be considered for the appointment.

  4. A list of participants in the decision-making process.

Following consideration of prospective candidates, the Authorizing Official must forward to the Major Unit Head via the Equity Administrator the recommendation for appointment. Included in this recommendation should be a rationale supporting the selectio n of the person chosen, and a list of other persons considered, including racial or ethnic origin and gender.
