Department of Architecture Engineering and Construction Assessment of FY 1995 Diversity Plan and Efforts The Department of Architecture, Engineering and Construction had one initiative for its FY95 Diversity Accountability Plan. This initiative was to conduct a series of video presentations focusing on cultures that were indigenous to some of the AEC staff, but foreign and unfamiliar to other staff members. We were able to take advantage of some videos that were professionally prepared and were also shown on public television. These were excellent presentations of various cultures and the reaction from staff was excellent. Those native to the culture were proud to have their culture highlighted, and those unfamiliar to the culture commented on how much they learned about the culture and how much more they understood. We believe this series was effective in broadening the horizons of our staff and in giving them a better understanding of persons from other cultures. Several other FY 95 diversity efforts were undertaken by the department and are worth noting. All department employees participated in sexual harassment prevention training conducted by the Office of Human Relations Programs. Working in a cross-departmental effort with Procurement and Supply, sexual harassment prevention language was codified in university construction contracts and strictly enforced with contractors to help create a safer environment for the greater university community. AEC continued the development and implementation of the Nyumburu Cultural Center construction project including display and discussion of the architectural model at campus events. Finally, a graphic display was created illustrating the origins of each staff member and will be prominently mounted to celebrate the diverse ethnic composition of our department.
