Immigrant/Emigrant Experience and German Culture
Paper proposals are invited for panels pertaining to the above theme. These
panels will be part of the international conference on
CULTURE AND THE STATE:
PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE
University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada
May 2-5, 2003
Migration is a common phenomenon not only in the 21st century, but in fact
has
been for centuries. In the course of time, both voluntary and involuntary
migration compelled people to express their experiences in their hostland
and
to reflect on their own culture. These panels seek to provide an overview
of
how German culture is portrayed in works by Germans, Austrians and Swiss
immigrating to other countries and foreigners emigrating to German-speaking
countries.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- German Immigration to the New World - the transplanted image of German
Culture
- Exile Literature - the forbidden image of German Culture
- Turkish and Other Diaspora Writers in the German-speaking countries - the
outsider's image of German Culture
- The Female Voice - the gendered image of German Culture
Please send an abstract of 250 words for a proposed paper of 20 minutes to
