The Conquest of America (9/15/02; ASECS/ISECS, 8/3/03-8/10/03)
This interdisciplinary panel will discuss interpretations of the conquest of
America during the long eighteenth century, and their political and
ideological function. Proposals are invited for twenty-minute papers, which
might (for example) be drawn from the following specialisms: the visual
arts; historiography (e.g., de Solis, Raynal); literature (e.g., Dryden's
The Indian Emperour, Voltaire's Alzire, Marmontel's Les Yncas, Sheridan's
Pizarro, Southey's Madoc); or opera (e.g., Graun's and Frederick the Great's
Montezuma, Winter's Das unterbrochene Opferfest, Spontini's Fernand Cortez,
or the many operas derived from Voltaire, de Solis, and Marmontel). The
panel is intended to create a culturally wide-ranging dialogue between
normally distinct disciplines. |
