CULTURE AND THE STATE IN AFRICA
In May 2003, the University of Alberta will host a conference around the
theme "Culture and the State: Past, Present and Future." A more detailed

Within this broader framework, the theme "Culture and the State in Africa"
intends to explore the notions of culture, nation and state as they pertain
specifically to Africa--both historically and in the present.
Papers are welcomed from all disciplines, and could address the following,
or any other, topics:
-- Culture, nationhood and the African Diaspora
-- Travel Writing and Identity
-- Popular culture
-- Art, Architecture and Culture in Africa
-- Colonialism, Postcolonialism and Identity
-- Sexuality in Africa
-- NEPAD and its ramifications for the future of culture and the state in
Africa
-- AIDS/HIV and culture
-- Film Studies
-- Oral tradition in a "postcolonial" environment
-- Media and Freedom of speech
Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words for a proposed paper of 20
minutes to be given in either English or French to the theme coordinator,
Peter Midgley.
Deadline: December 31, 2002.
