Science and Womanhood in 19th & Early 20th C. (11/1/02; SSAWW, 9/24/03-9/27/03)
This proposed session for a panel at the next Society for the Study of
American Women Writer's Conference in Fort Worth, TX will explore women
writers' responses to and representations of scientific treatments,
discoveries, practices, and theories in the nineteenth- and early
twentieth-century, including early sci-fi writing and narratives that
otherwise engage various forms of scientific (and pseudo-scientific)
advances. How do women writers of this era establish a dialogue between
literature and science? What does this intersection suggest about the
significance of literature to scientific discovery and vice-versa? In
particular, how do these narratives conspire with concerns of race,
gender, and sexuality? |
