"CONSTITUTIONALISM, LIBERAL VALUES, AND DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE IN POST-COMMUNIST SOCIETIES"
The Maryland Summer School in Timisoara, Romania was organized by the CSPCS at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Open Society Foundation in Timisoara, Romania. The classes were held at the facilities at West Timisoara University.
The purpose of the school was to familiarize young scholars from East-Central Europe and NIS with the main debates regarding transition from state socialism to open society conducted in the fields of political science and economics. The discussed topics were structured around the issues of Leninist legacies (political, social, and moral), the main threats to pluralism in the new democracies (populism, nationalism), and the prospects for liberalism and constitutionalism in the region. The school attracted PhD students in political science, sociology, history and public administration from seven countries.
Prof. Vladimir Tismaneanu (CSPCS) and Ms. Ilona Mihaies (Open Society Foundation) served as co-directors of the school. Beata Czajkowska (CSPCS), Mihai Babilon and Ioana Copil- Popovici (Open Society Foundation) were the school's coordinators.
