EAST EUROPEAN POLITICS AND SOCIETIES
Special Issue: An EEPS Roundtable
On Lessons of the First Postcommunist Decade
Volume 13, Number 2 (Spring 1999)
East European Politics and Societies announces the publication of "An EEPS Round Table: The Revolutions of 1989: Lessons of the First Postcommunist Decade," a special issue of the journal centered on looking back at the past ten years in Eastern Europe and revisiting the transition from Cold War politics to the postcommunist era. Edited by Vladimir Tismaneanu, Professor of Government and Politics and Director of the Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies at the University of Maryland, College Park, the journal's 200-plus pages delve to the core of the cultural, economic, and political changes of 1989 and their impacts on current and future events in Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Contributions to the "EEPS Round Table" represent a wide range of perspectives from American analysts and authors from Eastern Europe. This ambitious issue tackles the questions many have asked time and again over the past decade: How successful were the revolutions of 1989? To what degrees have countries experienced successes in overcoming the challenges of reinventing society after communism? Valerie Bunce ponders lessons learned since the fall of communism; Miklós Haraszti focuses on the need for procedures and institutions in the shaping of new democracies; Gail Kligman and Katherine Verdery reflect on the revolutions of 1989 and their aftermath; Slavenka Drakulic explores the role of nationalist intellectuals in the Yugoslav disaster; Sabrina P. Ramet and János Mátyás Kovács examine societal and economic shifts and the rise of a new elite. The "EEPS Round Table" is a riveting and important issue you won't want to miss.
Published by the University of California Press, East European Politics and Societies is a triannual platform for both traditional and innovative scholarship. The journal focuses on expanding readers' understanding of past events and current developments in countries from Greece to the Baltics. For thirteen years, EEPS has maintained a tradition of imaginative and erudite editorial vision, uniting the cutting-edge social research and political analysis of leading area specialists, historians, economists, political scientists and anthropologists from around the world.
