CSPCS Mission Statement

The Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies (CSPCS) was established in 1990. It is housed in the Department of Government and Politics, University of Maryland.

The mission of CSPCS is to develop and foster collaborative interdisciplinary research and public policy activities between U.S. and East-Central European educational institutions. The Center's aim is to advance and cultivate cooperation between scholars and policy-makers working on issues such as the consolidation of democracy, market-oriented economic transition, institutional development in post-communist countries, political culture, and the emergence of nationalism in the region of East-Central Europe. The Center has been involved in developing new theoretical frameworks for studying the problems of post-communism by providing assistance to faculty in the region and supporting course innovation. Additionally, the Center encourages and promotes interest in the region by supporting the work of young scholars involved in its Junior Fellow Program in the United States and Summer Schools in the region.

The conferences, workshops, seminars and summer schools that the Center organizes have help to foster the exchange of information and improve regional scholarship and policy research. The Center also publishes occasional papers.
