Film
Art In A Global Society
CMLT 280
This course is designed to give students
with some basic knowledge in the discipline of film studies a framework
for considering some of the many complex issues surrounding the notion
of Global Cinema. The fims we will examine present significant challenges
to the narrative conventions best exemplified by the Hollywood cinema.
We will begin with a clissical Hollywood narrative and move quickly into
a series of films which completely eschew the established techniques for
conveying narrative. In doing this we will come to an understanding
of how narrative is constructed in various art cinema traditions, experimental
films, and in Hollywood cinema. Our overall objective is to develop
an appreciation for cinematic traditions with alternative aesthetic and
ideological missions. -Joseph Schaub
