Hugh Ming Lee


A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Hugh Lee (hlee@deans.umd.edu) received his BA from St. Mary's College of California and his MA and PhD from Stanford University.  He has taught at Indiana University (Bloomington), Miami University of Ohio, Howard University, and the University of Maryland (College Park), where he is an Associate Professor of Classics.

He has held year-long research fellowships from the Fullbright Foundation (Rome), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Council of Learned Societies (Cologne).  Among his publications are articles on Pindar and Vergil, but his current research interests center on ancient Greek and Roman athletics.  He is currently working on the program and schedule of the ancient Olympic Games and on Greek athletics in the Roman period. His most recent publications are: "Running and the Stadium", Archaeology, (July/August 1996) 35; "Yet Another Scoring System for the Ancient Pentathlon", Nikephoros 8 (1996) 41-55, and "The Later Greek Boxing Glove and the 'Roman' Caestus:  A Centennial Reevaluation of Jx.thner's Uber antike Turnger`.the, (forthcoming, Nikephoros 10).

Professor Lee teaches both Greek and Latin at all levels and has taught the following courses in translation:  Greek and Roman Mythology, Advanced Mythology, Greek Tragedy, Greek and Roman Athletics, Greek Literature, Literature of the Ancient World, and Greek Civilization. Hugh Lee is also Program Coordinator for the Washington DC Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and a member of the Board of Governors.
