President's Committee on Sportsmanship
July 26, 2001, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Meeting Notes
Committee chair Charles Wellford reported the following
activity since the last meeting.
He met with the editor, the sports editor and a reporter
from the Diamondback, and will continue to meet with them
to keep the campus informed of committee activities.
He received several telephone calls expressing opinions
about the committee's work.
He has invited Mike Norris, who will be accompanied by
several other students, to make a presentation to the
committee at the August 21st meeting.
George Cathcart, Director of University Communications, has
joined the committee as an ex-officio member, to assist
with press inquiries.
It was pointed out that the terrapintimes.com chat room had
misinformation about the appointment of the Sportsmanship
Committee. George Cathcart was asked to respond.
Members of the committee then spent some time describing
and discussing the events that prompted the appointment of
the committee.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Charles Wellford
indicated that since Dr. Mote gave the Committee the task
of developing a statement about sportsmanship and a set of
principles that go with that definition, he began doing
some research. He found that sportsmanship is generally
defined in the negative. And it is at the high school
level where the issue receives the most attention. He
asked for volunteers to help him begin drafting a statement
defining sportsmanship. Ellie Weingaertner, Jackson Bryer
and Dick Conti agreed to assist.
NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2001, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00
noon, Room 2111, Stamp Student Union Building.
