Draft Recommendations from the President's Committee on
Sportsmanship
1. Throwing of any objects at athletic events should be
banned in entirety.
2. Display of signs at athletic events should be allowed
as long as such displays do not interfere with the viewing
of events by other individuals. Also, the current practice
of not allowing signs on poles or other extenders should be
continued.
3. For home basketball games, the first five rows behind
the visiting team's bench should be reserved for use by
registered student groups (one row per student group) based
on a lottery system that takes place at the beginning of
each basketball season. The next five rows should be open
for general student seating.
4. Rock and Roll Part II can be played by the University
of Maryland Band once during each half of basketball and
football games.
5. A sportsmanship creed should be developed based on the
Statement on Sportsmanship and displayed prominently at
athletic events.
6. The University Police should develop a plan for
improving surveillance of crowds at athletic events.
7. There should continue to be a zero tolerance policy for
spontaneous bonfires. Only open fires approved by the
Department of Environmental Safety following existing
campus policy should be allowed.
8. The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs
should be asked to work with student groups to identify
positive events that can occur following major football and
basketball games that will allow our students and fans to
celebrate in a way that is consistent with the notion of
sportsmanship and appropriate campus behavior.
9. The Committee supports the draft policy currently
before the University Senate to extend the Code of Student
Conduct to off-campus felony and misdemeanor convictions.
