Augustine J. Smith, a former sugar factor from Virginia, was president from 1882 to 1887. Smith focused on public relations activities, trying to build support and loyalty among farmers, students and the members of the state legislature.
Enrollment continually declined due to a lack of financial support. Smith
accumulated a debt of over $15,000. Pleading ill health, he resigned.
