John M. Colby had been principal of a local academy before serving as president from 1860 to 1861. The College's enrollment peaked at 78 during his tenure, but dropped off shortly with the approach of war. Only 17 students and three professors stayed through the July commencement. Colby resigned during the academic year to become an officer in the Union army.
