Diversity Panel Vision and Charge
"From a Diverse Campus to a Diverse
Community"
We have good reason to be proud of the substantial and increasing
diversity of our campus. At the same time, many have
observed that we have not taken full advantage of opportunities to
bring our campus family together into a diverse
community. Some say that we have become a federation of interest
groups rather than a union of diverse people. The
reasons for this may be partly rooted in university organization,
biases, and, of course, in our history as a university and a
nation. Or it may be that we, individually and collectively, have
simply not been sufficiently determined to bring ourselves
together. We now have an opportunity to further consider our
culture.
A review of the university that looks over the entire campus can
help us identify new opportunities to build more
interchange among people of our diverse community. These
opportunities may derive from some of our current practices
that divide us, or from omission of actions that could enrich the
campus experience for faculty, staff, and students.
This panel review should:
The panel is to conclude its work and deliver a final report by June
30, 2000. Interim reports presenting panel
recommendations will facilitate implementation of the findings
during the Spring and Summer, 2000.
