The Master of Arts Degree
Candidates for the M.A. complete 30 credit hours including 6 credits of
thesis research. Course work includes two required core courses,
Introduction to Critical Theory and Problems in Comparative Studies.
Each student then defines a creoo-cultural or interdisciplinary field of
concentration supported by at least 9 credit hours. All students must
take at least one course in literature and at least one course in a
non-print medium such as film
The Doctor of Philosophy Degree
The Ph.D. normally requires a minimum of 51 course credits including 12
credits of dissertation research. Relevant courses completed during
M.A. study may be credited toward the Ph.D. Doctoral students take at
least one advanced theory course in addition to the two required for the
M.A., define and study two fields of concentration, and complete at
least 12 additional credits in a professional discipline (e.g., French,
Theatre, Women's Studies). Comprehensive examinations are taken in
critical theory as well as in the student's areas of specialization.
Citation in Comparative Studies
The Citation is awarded to the student who has completed 15 credits of
study in cross-cultural analysis of literature and/or screens in the
Comparative Literature Program. The Citation will symbolize achievement
in completed areas of study. Recognition will be in the form of an
acknowledgment or designation on the baccalaureate transcript, and at the
graduation ceremony. The Citation guidelines are as follows:
- at least one CMLT Core course in literature and at least one CMLT
Core course in visual media;
- all credits taken at the College Park campus must be taken under the
CMLT rubric. However, students may apply for the acceptance of up to 6
credits of work taken in an equivalent program at another institution;
- no more than 9 Citation credits may be taken at the 200 level (i.e.,
at least 6 credits must constitute courses at the 300 level or above);
- no more than 6 of the 15 credits may be applied to the student's
major;
- Citation awards must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate
Studies of the Comparative Literature Program. Notification of earning
of the Citation will also appear on the student's transcript.
